The LeadBeaters Possum case- VicForests ordered to pay all costs

The LeadBeaters Possum is very small, and very vulnerable. It may well be the "canary in our Ash Forests" in East Gippsland.

This is a huge win to Friends of Leadbeater's Possum Inc. and our environment.

Last year, the Federal Court ruled that VicForests’ logging operations contravened federal law and failed to protect the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum and the threatened Greater Glider. This was a huge win to Friends of Leadbeater's Possum Inc. and our environment.

VicForests appealed the decision. The Friends group then raised close to the $100,000 they needed to contest the appeal in the Federal Court. In May, the Federal Court rejected all but one of the 31 grounds for the appeal. The Court ruled that “VicForests’ logging operations are still exempt from federal environment law under Regional Forest Agreements” (see report from Environment Justice Australia). Despite ecause of the other 30 - the full Federal Court ordered VicForests to pay the costs of Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum! This is testament to the strength and importance of the original findings that were upheld on appeal.

Now the Friends and EJA are taking the case to the High Court, and they need our help. If you want to contribute to Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum Inc legal fund at https://chuffed.org/project/protect-our-possums
