wallan wallan Regional Parkland: a major new park

The wallan wallan Regional Parkland Alliance has launched a campaign to establish the "wallan wallan Regional Parkland" in the southern part of Mitchell Shire.
The Alliance is made up of Wallan Environment Group, Merri Creek Management Committee, Friends of Merri Creek and BEAM Mitchell Environment Group.
The name "wallan wallan" comes from the Woi-wurrung word meaning "circular place of water," referring to the extensive network of swamps and wetlands that were historically in the area. These wetlands acted as a natural water containment until drained for farming in the early 20th century. Restoring these wetlands – to minimise future flood risk – is a core purpose of creating the Parkland.

The Parkland will protect 3,000 hectares in the upper reaches of the Merri Creek, a waterway that runs from the Divide, through to the heart of northern Melbourne. It will feature the unique landscape of the wallan wallan region, a combination of extensive wetlands and ancient volcanic cones, providing habitat for waterbirds and wildlife, and supporting migratory populations of threatened bird species. The surrounding landscape is slated for urban development, and industrial use.
This Parkland is needed as a place for the local and expanding community to explore nature, enjoy time together and to stay healthy and active. Shared trails will enable cycling or walking from Melbourne to Wallan and eventually to Bendigo. You can also support our campaign by signing our petition, generously sponsored by local MP Ros Spence. Help us get 10,000 signatures to have the petition debated in Parliament! https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/get-involved/petitions/wallan-regional-park
